OMG Lisbon for two weeks!? That sounds incredible - adding it to my list! This residency has been so incredible that I think I’m making it my goal to apply to one residency a month starting in August :)
Thank you so much for the sweet shout out, Caroline!! Kenyon was a blast, and I'm so so thrilled to hear you're having the best time at your residency <3 we're doing ittttt!!
this is so helpful -- and perfect timing for me. i've been scouring sources for residencies (and how to not fall into traps of faux programs that are money grabs) and i'm keeping this as a fantastic resource :') thank you caroline!!
This is incredibly helpful and I've always loved the idea of doing something like a residency but never knew how to go about it, or whether I could afford it. It was illuminating to discover the differences between these 3 things and what goes on at each, it's all rather mystifying to me.
Funnily enough, I will actually be in South Carolina next July (my parents live there) and so hey, maybe that's a sign? (haha - if it took you over 4 years, then I haven't a hope in hell 😂)
You should definitely apply!! Looking back, I was not ready when I first applied, so I think I maybe jumped the gun applying when I was too novice of a writer, which is probably why it took me so long!
Of course!! There’s more than enough opportunities out there for everyone! These experiences have changed my life as a writer, so I want everyone to do them!
Wow what an amazing resource, thank you for putting this together Caroline! I've always found writing opportunities like these so intimidating/exclusive, so I never really looked into them - but your post has definitely inspired me to take it more seriously. Also, your residency sounds like a dream - so exciting, huge congrats!!
I am so so glad this was helpful Sophia! And yes, I felt the same way for a while, but once I went to one, I instantly saw how the hassle of all the research and applying is totally worth it!! And thank you :)
wow, this is such a helpful resource! out of curiosity, are there other lists or resources you use to find new workshops, conferences, or residency opportunities?
I have seen some pretty good ones here on substack for residencies specifically! And there’s a bunch online. I just did a lot of googling at the beginning and reading reddit threads and talking to other writers. Sorry I don’t have any specific ones for you! I’m glad this helpful though :)
This is so so so useful! Thank you! I would love to talk to you when you are back from your residency and hear about your experience there. Have fun and make the most of it!
Yeah that is so frustrating! But I do know people who got full scholarships to both breadloaf and Sewanee! And a lot of the residencies are free if you’re able to get in! But of course so many are just really cost prohibitive and it feels difficult when you’re starting out and you can get in, but not get the money (which is where I’m at right now 😫)
Congrats on your acceptance! To add to this: Apply for DISQUIET! I went this summer for two weeks in Lisbon and it was one of my fave.

this is so interesting!
it does drive me a bit crazy that most writing opportunity are quite expensive. I guess you could argue that about education in general.
I would loooove to do a residency one day, so I'll def coming back to this guide!
